About The Breed & Breeding Practices

The Bernedoodle is a gentle, intelligent, and trainable hybrid dog breed that is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle. “Invented” in 2003, Bernedoodles, as well as their smaller hybrid relatives, the Mini Bernedoodle, have exploded in popularity ever since, with some becoming social media stars. One of the most notable characteristics of this breed is their intelligence. As descendants of Poodles, famous for their sharp minds, this breed exhibits remarkable cognitive abilities. Loyalty is another inherent trait in this breed from their Bernese Mountain Dog heritage. Incredibly devoted to their pet parents, this breed strives to be a constant source of comfort and companionship. Whether it’s learning new tricks or obedience commands, they are quick studies and enjoy mental stimulation

Bernedoodles are known for their unique and often low-shedding coats. The coat can vary depending on factors like generation (F1, F1B, etc.) and individual genetics. Typically, these charming pups have wavy or curly hair that is hypoallergenic, making them suitable for individuals with allergies. Bernedoodle colors come in a variety, including tricolor combinations such as black, white, and rust, mirroring the distinctive markings of the Bernese Mountain Dog.

if you decide to search for Bernedoodle puppies for sale, it’s crucial to choose a reputable breeder. Conduct thorough research to ensure that the breeder follows ethical practices and prioritizes the well-being of their dogs. Reputable Bernedoodle breeders prioritize the health and temperament of their dogs, conduct necessary health screenings, and provide a nurturing environment for the puppies.

Breeding Practices

1. The main Bernedoodle genetic combinations
1. Traditional Bernedoodle — F1
50% Bernese Mountain Dog + 50% Poodle
The foundation cross. Usually chosen for the classic Bernese tri-colour pattern, substantial bone and a fluffy coat. Coat texture, shedding and body type can vary considerably.
2. F1b Bernedoodle
F1 Bernedoodle + Poodle
Approximately 25% Bernese and 75% Poodle. Often selected for a curlier coat, facial furnishings and reduced shedding, while retaining Bernese colouring in some puppies.
3. Multigenerational Bernedoodle
Bernedoodle × Bernedoodle, across multiple generations
American breeders select parents for a particular head shape, coat, size, bone and colour. This can improve consistency, but the label alone does not guarantee a particular genetic makeup.
4. Australian Bernedoodle
Bernedoodle + multigenerational Australian Labradoodle
This introduces Labrador Retriever, Poodle and typically Cocker Spaniel ancestry through the Australian Labradoodle line. Breeders may select for a softer, fleece-like coat, facial furnishings and a particular expression. It does not necessarily include an Australian Shepherd.
5. Aussie Mountain Doodle (also called Australian Mountain Doodle)
Bernedoodle ancestry + Australian Shepherd ancestry + Poodle
Developed in part to produce merle patterns, additional colour combinations and a slightly more athletic appearance. These dogs may have blue eyes, but neither eye colour nor coat pattern is guaranteed.
These are established breeding approaches, not a complete list of every American breeder's program. The important distinction is that the Australian Bernedoodle and Aussie Mountain Doodle are different crosses.
2. The specific looks American breeders select for
The classic, heavy-boned Bernese look
Select Bernese parents with broad heads, substantial bone, deep bodies and clear tri-colour markings. Retain enough Bernese influence through subsequent generations rather than continually crossing back to Poodles.
The teddy-bear face
Select parents with broad skulls, moderate muzzles, expressive eyes and soft, furnished faces. Repeated selection over generations can make the look more consistent. Extremely short muzzles should not be pursued at the expense of breathing and eye health.
The straight or wavy fleece coat
Select for lower curl while retaining furnishings. Coat curl and shedding are influenced by different genetic factors, so a straight-looking coat is not automatically a shedding coat.
Rich mahogany tri-colour
Select for strong black, white and rust markings, with deeper rust pigment. Both the pattern and pigment intensity depend on inherited variants, so selecting two visually similar dogs is not enough to guarantee the result.
Merle tri-colour
Often achieved by introducing Australian Shepherd or Miniature American Shepherd ancestry. Merle changes pigment distribution; it is not simply a Bernese colour variation. Merle-to-merle breeding must be avoided because it can produce puppies at increased risk of deafness and eye abnormalities.
